This site was created by Stephanie Brimson. Ms. Brimson is in the process of earning her Master's Degree in history at California State University, San Marcos. She specializes in American popular culture during the interwar period with a specific focus on pulp fiction magazines.

This site welcomes anyone with an interest in the history of gender in America. However, some items on this site may not be suitable for younger audiences. This site was created primarily for undergraduate college students and teachers. “Weird Tales: A Unique Portrayal of Gender by Seabury Quinn” is an interpretive site. It discusses Weird Tales author Seabury Quinn’s portrayal of gender, particularly with his famous character, Jules de Grandin. The site is comprised of four different components: “Mr. Weird Tales: A Look at the Life of Seabury Quinn,” “Challenging Gender: A History of Gender Relations in Interwar America,” “Gender in Seabury Quinn’s Weird Tales,” and “Activities.” The first section provides a brief biography of Seabury Quinn. The second section provides a general history of gender. “Gender in Seabury Quinn’s Weird Tales,” provides analyses Quinn’s use of gender within his Weird Tales stories within the context of the previous sections. Lastly, “Activities,” is provided for teachers who want to widen and test their students’ understandings of gender depictions while also analyzing current gender expectations.
